The Sound House

by on May.29, 2012, under blog

The Sound House at 16 1/2 Mill Lane was in a former life a garage but prior to that it was used as an outbuilding to hang the sounds of fish for the end use in manufacturing isinglass.

“Isinglass is a substance obtained from the dried swim bladders of fish. It is a form of collagen used mainly for the clarification of wine & beer. It can also be cooked into a paste for specialized gluing purposes. Isinglass was originally made exclusively from Sturgeon, especially Beluga sturgeon, until the 1795 invention by William Murdoch of a cheap substitute using cod. This was extensively used in Great Britain in place of Russian isinglass. The bladders, once removed from the fish, processed and dried are formed into various shapes for use.”*

Further down by the Pond Rueben Norwood, Karl’s great, great grandfather cut ice at the Mill Pond and housed it in the ice house which has since burned down. The Sound House was used for the hanging and drying of cod until it was converted to a garage during the advent of the automobile. In more recent times the garage was then further converted to a guest studio aptly named The Sound House”.

Over the past sixteen years it has had several iterations of improvements with the most recent being accomplished three years ago with an updated kitchen and bathroom. The cottage i.e. The Sound House still retains a working fireplace and along with the addition of a lovely bay window drinks in the views of the ocean. Decorated in a Martha Stewart/nautical theme with all of the comforts of home, a vacationer may enjoy wireless internet, flat screen tv and the conveniences of modern day life in a jewel box vacation studio within a two minute walk to Front Beach.

Surrounded by historic graveyards, an old English appearing lane with glowing lights from the lantern at the fronting graveyard – you have come back in time when life was simpler, peaceful and reflective. A perfect place for “two” and best of all, you can bring Baxter, Bailey, Max, Montoro, Sherma and Finigan as we are pet friendly!

Cottage on the Pond – “The Porch”

by on May.28, 2012, under blog

We have always enjoyed sitting on the porch at Cottage on the Pond taking in the spectacular ocean views with coffee or wine but since “the porch” has been renovated the views are even clearer due to new screening and opening up the viewing space.  Sun rises at the cottage are gorgeous while the afternoons and evenings are eye catching cocktails of lobster boats, sailboats and all manner of pleasure craft plying the waters off of Rockport.

After all these years our favorite place is always “the porch” yet we are fortunate enough to have the old mill pond in our backyard.  It would be difficult to not find a beautiful place to roost at the cottage – “the porch” has been recently renovated with fresh paint; new roof and antique wicker with gay colored cushions accented by nautical & Rockport theme wall hangings.  A great place to enjoy a favorite novel; visit with friends over drinks but the best libation of all is just hanging on “The Porch” for one of the unrivaled views of the sea on the coast of Rockport.  May your next vacation be at our special perch at Cottage on the Pond where “the porch” beckons.
